A Simple & Elegant Way to Celebrate Mom
There’s something timeless and meaningful about gathering around a beautifully set table to celebrate Mother’s Day. While brunches and dinners are always lovely, we’ve found that a Mother’s Day tea offers a more relaxed, intimate way to connect, celebrate, and truly enjoy the moment together.
At Shookhill Secret, we believe the best gatherings are the ones that feel thoughtful—but not overly complicated. This tea party is exactly that: simple to prepare, beautiful to present, and easy to enjoy.
🍃 Setting the Scene: A Table That Feels Special (Without the Stress)
We started with our favorite china—this is the perfect occasion to bring out pieces that may not get everyday use. Mixing and matching patterns keeps things interesting while still feeling cohesive.
For the centerpiece, we kept things effortless but elevated. A pink hydrangea plant placed in a large bowl creates a lush focal point. We tucked in green moss around the base for texture and added soft pink tea candles in glass votives for a warm, inviting glow. The result is a table that feels layered, seasonal, and completely achievable.
To add height and interest, we used the DIY tiered trays we shared on the blog last week. These trays are not only practical, but they instantly give your table that classic tea party feel—perfect for displaying a mix of sweet and savory bites.
☕ The Tea Selection: Something for Everyone
A thoughtful tea selection is at the heart of any great tea party. We like to offer a few options so guests can choose their favorite:
- A classic Earl Grey (our go-to favorite)
- A calming herbal blend
- A decaf option for those who prefer it
Serve everything in teapots if you have them, or keep it simple with a tray of mugs and a kettle nearby. A few lemon slices, honey, and sugar cubes complete the setup.
🫖 The Menu: Sweet & Savory Favorites
The beauty of a tea party menu is that everything can be made ahead and served at room temperature. We kept our menu simple, balanced, and easy to assemble.
Savory Selection:
- Cucumber with cream cheese
- Shrimp Salad on toast points
- Deviled egg sampler
- Chicken salad on mini Parker House rolls (no time to make your own – Roberts is our go to)
- Smoked salmon with a light spread
Sweet Treats:
- Mini pastries, muffins or scones
- Lemon Squares
- Petit Fours or sugar cookies
- Chocolate-dipped fruit
Arranging these on tiered trays (from our post last week) not only saves space but creates a beautiful presentation with very little effort.
🎁 Thoughtful Details That Make It Personal
We always believe it’s the small touches that make a gathering feel truly special. For Mother’s Day, we added a personal element by attaching our custom Mother’s Day gift tags to each gift.
Whether you’re giving something simple or something more curated, a thoughtful tag elevates the presentation and adds a meaningful finishing touch.
If you’re still looking for ideas, we’ve also created a Curated Mother’s Day Gift Guide filled with thoughtful options for every type of mom—from the entertainer to the traveler.
🌷 Keep It Simple, Make It Meaningful
Hosting a Mother’s Day tea party doesn’t have to be a production. With a few intentional details—a beautiful centerpiece, a thoughtful tea selection, and simple make-ahead bites—you can create a gathering that feels both elegant and effortless.
Our goal is always to help you celebrate life’s moments in a way that feels approachable and enjoyable. This Mother’s Day, we hope you take the time to slow down, gather around the table, and celebrate the amazing women in your life.
