Let the Holiday Magic Linger…

A Festive New Year’s Bloody Mary Bar & Easy Entertaining! The days between Christmas and New Year’s have a rhythm all their own. The rush of the holidays softens, the calendar feels lighter, and there’s a collective exhale as we settle into that in-between season. It’s a time we’ve come to treasure—a gentle pause before the new year begins. This year, we hope you’re spending the holiday with family or friends.  We are not hosting the festivities this year, but we’re spending the 31st with great friends. And have been asked to recreate our annual New Year’s Day Bloody Mary Bar—a relaxed, festive way to keep the celebrations going without feeling like a production. At Shookhill Secret, we believe the secret to hosting during this stretch of the holidays is simplicity. This isn’t the time for elaborate menus or rigid schedules. Instead, it’s about creating an inviting setup that encourages people to linger, help themselves, and ease into the new year together. Embrace the Space Between The days after Christmas are perfect for slowing down. We like to schedule a few casual outings—a winter walk in our favorite park, a stop for coffee, or an afternoon curled up with a good book. At home, it might look like a nail night with family, a low-key spa evening with face masks and low-key festive music, or even what we lovingly call “post-Christmas couch rotting”—cozy blankets, holiday movies, and comfort food pulled straight from the freezer. We restock our DIY hot cocoa bar so everyone can treat themselves on their own schedule These small, unstructured moments are what make this time of year feel restorative rather than rushed. New Year’s Eve, Kept Simple As New Year’s Eve approaches, we’re firm believers in flexible plans. Whether it’s dinner out, a movie date, or a quiet gathering with friends, the goal is to welcome the new year without overcommitting. The real celebration, for us, happens the next day. Our Signature New Year’s Day Bloody Mary Bar New Year’s Day calls for something festive yet forgiving—and a Bloody Mary bar checks every box. It’s interactive, customizable, and easy to prep ahead. Here’s how we like to set ours up: Start with the BaseWe prepare a classic tomato juice based cocktail and allow individuals to kick up the heat and make a spicier variation if they choose. Layer on the FlavorWorcestershire sauce, hot sauce, horseradish, celery salt, cracked pepper, and lemon wedges are essentials. Arrange everything in small bowls or jars so guests can build their perfect mix. The Garnish MomentThis is where the fun really begins. Think crisp candied bacon, boozy onions, olives, pickled vegetables, Wickles, pepperoncini, celery sticks, shrimp, cherry tomatoes, and cheese cubes. The more variety, the better—it turns each drink into a little work of art. We set all of the accoutrements in bowls with tongs alongside a container of long bamboo skewers so everyone can customize their drink based on their preferences.  Some are truly a meal! Keep the Food EasyTo balance the bar, we love a DIY bagel setup using bagels from a local bakery, lox, cream cheese, sliced red onion, capers, and fresh herbs. Add a simple fruit salad and a few juices, and you have a spread that feels thoughtful without requiring constant attention. A Moment to Reflect This quieter gathering is also the perfect opportunity to reflect on the year behind us and look ahead. We like to roll out a sheet of craft paper and invite everyone to jot down intentions, goals, or hopes for the coming year. It’s relaxed, meaningful, and a lovely way to mark the transition into something new. Let the Season Linger The magic of the holidays doesn’t have to end on December 25th. These final days—shared meals, cozy mornings, and simple traditions—help bridge the old year to the new with warmth and connection. So whether you’re hosting friends, visiting family or simply enjoying the quiet, let the season linger just a little longer. Cheers to a joyful New Year and the simple pleasures that make it memorable.

Being Present During the Holidays…

Slow Down, Gather Close, and Savor the Season The holidays have a way of rushing past us if we let them. One moment we’re decorating the tree and checking off gift lists, and the next, the lights are coming down and the calendar has quietly flipped to January. That’s why, every year, we give ourselves the same gentle reminder: this is the moment to slow down and truly be present. At Shookhill Secret, we believe the heart of the holidays isn’t found in doing more — it’s found in noticing what’s already here. The meals, the laughter, the quiet mornings, and the familiar rituals that make this season feel comforting and full. If you’re anything like us, you’ve already done the hard work. You’ve decorated, shopped (and yes, we still stand by one of our favorite practical gifts — the Charmast portable charger with built-in cables and plug, a true holiday hero), wrapped gifts, and prepped your home for gatherings. Now comes the most important part: enjoying it all. Start the Day Slowly One of our favorite holiday rituals is also the simplest. Each morning, before the house wakes up, we turn on the tree lights, pour a cup of coffee or tea, and sit quietly — no agenda, no to-do list. It’s a small pause, but it sets the tone for the entire day. The glow of the lights, the quiet hum of the house, and a few deep breaths are often all we need to feel grounded. Cook and Bake Together The holidays are the perfect time to gather in the kitchen — not to impress, but to connect. We’re baking some of our seasonal favorites this year: sugar cookies, pizelles, and delicate florentine cookie trees (recipe below). These are recipes we’ve made year after year, the kind that come with memories baked right in. Invite everyone to help — rolling dough, dusting powdered sugar, sneaking a taste or two. The kitchen doesn’t have to be spotless, and the cookies don’t need to be perfect. What matters is the time spent together, hands busy and conversations flowing. Make Space to Relax Together When kids are home from school — or heading home for the holidays — it’s easy to feel pulled in a dozen directions. Instead of filling every hour, we try to leave space for unplanned togetherness. A few of our favorite low-key ideas: Work on a puzzle together at the kitchen table Plan a casual game night with cards, mahjong or board games Watch a holiday movie you’ve seen a hundred times, but still love These moments may seem small, but they’re often the ones that linger longest. Enjoy the Season You’ve Prepared For So much of holiday preparation is about caring for others — shopping, cooking, hosting, organizing. But this is your reminder that you get to enjoy it too. Let the table stay set a little longer. Light the candles on an ordinary night. Sit on the couch together without rushing to the next thing. The holidays don’t need to be grand to be meaningful. Often, it’s the quiet moments — a shared laugh, a warm cookie, the glow of the tree lights — that become the memories we carry forward. As the season unfolds, we encourage you to slow down, gather close, and soak it all in. Be present. The rest can wait.
