If you’re dreaming of a trip filled with breathtaking mountain views, crystal-clear lakes, and plenty of outdoor adventures, Banff and Lake Louise in the spectacular Canadian Rockies should be at the top of your list. Here’s a thoughtfully curated itinerary to help you make the most of your time in this stunning region. Day 1: Arrival in Calgary – Fly into Calgary and rent a car—this will be your key to exploring the surrounding area. For your first night, we recommend staying downtown. We recommend the Hilton Westley for comfort and convenience. After settling in, treat yourself to dinner at SaltLik, a local favorite known for its delicious steaks and laid-back atmosphere. Get a good night’s rest because adventure awaits! Days 2-3: Calgary to Banff After breakfast, it’s time to hit the road towards Banff, just a 90-minute drive from Calgary. The drive west into the Rockies is spectacular with it’s towering peaks and pristine landscape. There is plenty to do and see in the town of Banff and Banff National Park. Spend the day exploring some of Banff’s highlights: Bow Falls and Bow Lake: A must-see for their beauty and serene atmosphere. Johnston Canyon: An easy hike that rewards you with stunning waterfalls. Two Jack Lake Viewpoint: A picture-perfect stop. Banff Upper Hot Springs: Soak in the natural hot springs while gazing at the mountains. For accommodations in Banff, here are two options: Fairmont Banff Springs: A luxurious, iconic hotel known as the “Castle in the Rockies”. The Juniper Hotel: A charming and more affordable option with fantastic views. In the evening, stroll through town and stop for dinner. We enjoyed fondue at Ticino, a cozy spot that serves Swiss-Italian cuisine. There are a variety of restaurant options in Banff. We also recommend booking a few excursions when planning your trip. We recommend Viator to book a few adventures when planning your trip: Northern Lights Experience including dinner at the Sky Bistro at the top of Sulphur Mountain. The gondola ride up is nothing short of spectacular, and the sunset view is unforgettable. Columbia Icefield Adventure is a trip to the Athabasca Glacier aboard a massive Ice Explorer vehicle and then walk out on a 10,000-year-old-sheet of ice. Columbia Icefield Skywalk is a walk out on a suspended glass-floored platform for a jaw-dropping stroll beyond the cliff’s edge, 918 feet above the valley floor. Days 4-5: Banff to Lake Louise After soaking up Banff’s charm for a couple of days, head toward Lake Louise, one of the most photographed lakes in the world. The striking turquoise water is unforgettable. For accommodations in Lake Louise, here are two options: Fairmont Château Lake Louise: A luxurious lakeside retreat (splurge). Paradise Bungalows: Quaint and affordable, perfect for a quiet stay. Make sure to hike up to the Lake Agnes Tea House for afternoon tea, and if weather permits, sit outside to enjoy drinks and an appetizer with unbeatable views. Don’t miss a scenic drive along the Icefields Parkway—one of the world’s most spectacular drives. The only way to see the most photographed lake in the world is to book a tour to Moraine Lake (hike the Rockpile Trail for an elevated view). Book a reservation for the Columbia Icefield Adventure to walk out onto a glacier, and stop at the Lake Louise Gondola to Mt. Whitehorn. Lunch at Whitehorn Bistro is an absolute must—the view is breathtaking. For something unique, consider going horseback riding in Banff National Park or getting out on the water for a paddle. If time allows, continue your journey further north to Jasper. Be sure to stop at Lake Maligne and experience Spirit Island on Lake Maligne for even more stunning scenery or schedule a helicopter tour of the stunning Rockies. Day 6: Return to Calgary After soaking in the beauty of Banff and Lake Louise, head back to Calgary for your return flight home, reflecting on all the unforgettable moments you’ve experienced. Rocky Mountain Packing Essentials: Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so layers are key. Here’s what we pack for a comfortable and stylish trip: A Patagonia 22L Terravia daypack for daily excursions. Layered sweaters & Nano Puff jacket for warmth and flexibility. Gloves and a hat for cooler temperatures. Sturdy hiking boots. Our favorite Darn Tough socks for all-day comfort. All of this fits perfectly into our Patagonia 55L Black Hole Duffel bag. Whether you’re hiking, soaking in hot springs, browsing through the shops in Banff or simply enjoying the serene beauty of Lake Louise, this trip to the spectacular Canadian Rockies promises memories that will last a lifetime.
