And for over two decades, our go-to stay has always been Hawk’s Cay Resort on Duck Key. Getting There: A Quick Flight & A Short Drive One of the things we love most about Marathon is how easy it is to get there. We typically fly directly into the Marathon airport, avoiding the long drive down the Overseas Highway. From there, it’s just a short drive to Hawk’s Cay Resort—a world away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. But if you prefer a road trip, the drive from Miami or Key West is one of the most scenic in the country, offering breathtaking ocean views at every turn. Where to Stay: The Ultimate Island Retreat There’s a reason we’ve been staying at Hawk’s Cay Resort for over twenty years. This tropical oasis is the largest resort in the Florida Keys, yet it still feels intimate and secluded. The award-winning pools and meticulously kept grounds make every moment feel like paradise. Whether you’re sipping coffee on your private balcony or enjoying the view of the turquoise waters, relaxation is guaranteed. The resort also boasts an impressive lineup of amenities for every kind of traveler. Start your morning with a sunrise yoga session, then indulge in a treatment at the full-service spa. If you’re up for an adventure, take a fishing charter, go snorkeling on the reef, or book a sunset cruise. Hawk’s Cay holds a special place in our hearts, and we were heartbroken when Hurricane Irma devastated the resort in 2017, forcing it to close for an entire year. But after a $50 million renovation, Hawk’s Cay came back stronger than ever in 2018, with stunning upgrades and a renewed commitment to island luxury. Must-Do Activities in Marathon A trip to Marathon isn’t complete without a few signature experiences. Here are our top recommendations: Salt + Ash – amazing elevated cuisine right at the Hawks Cay Resort Keys Fisheries – No visit is complete without a meal (or two) at this local institution. Order a fresh seafood platter downstairs or head to the upstairs tiki bar for cocktails and stone crab claws while enjoying the water views. The Turtle Hospital – This heartwarming and educational experience offers an inside look at the rescue and rehabilitation of sea turtles. It’s a must-visit for animal lovers of all ages. Sombrero Beach – One of the prettiest beaches in the Keys, Sombrero Beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or just soaking in the laid-back island atmosphere. Hawks Cay Marina – Offers some of the best fishing in the Keys. Planning an inshore or offshore fishing excursion is easy. Final Thoughts: A One-of-a-Kind Destination Marathon, with its tropical charm and relaxed ambiance, is one of our all-time favorite destinations. Whether we’re enjoying the luxurious comforts of Hawk’s Cay, indulging in fresh seafood at Keys Fisheries, or spending the afternoon at Sombrero Beach, there’s always something special about this island escape.
