Welcome to the Caymans, known as the jewel of the Caribbean, where turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and adventures await you. Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman Islands, is a dream destination for travelers seeking sun, sand, and serenity. Here we’ve provided our recommendations for first-time visitors – highlighting must-do activities, accommodations, and fun experiences. Take a look at our Travel Finds, pack your bags and get ready for a Grand Cayman getaway.
Where to Stay
For a memorable stay on the island, look no further than the renowned 7 Mile Beach. This stretch of powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters is home to some of Grand Cayman’s best oceanfront properties. For first-time visitors, we recommend the Westin, Kimpton, or Marriott oceanfront properties. Each offers impeccable service, stunning views, and a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Sunset Serenity
As the sun dips below the horizon, 7 Mile Beach transforms into a mesmerizing scene of beauty and tranquility. Sunset is the perfect time to take a leisurely stroll along the beach. Don’t miss putting your toes in the sand and soaking in the golden hour along 7 Mile Beach during your visit.
Unforgettable Experiences
No trip to the Caymans is complete without experiencing a trip to Stingray City, where you can interact with gentle stingrays in their natural habitat. We booked a trip that also included snorkeling stops (here’s a link to book: Stingray City Adventure). Snorkeling enthusiasts will be awe-struck by the vibrant marine life and coral reefs that await beneath the surface. For an even deeper adventure, consider scuba diving with Living the Dream Divers, who offer expert guidance and unforgettable underwater experiences for any level diver.
Relaxation and Rejuvenation
We enjoy exploring and participating in unique experiences when we travel. However, it’s also nice to indulge in some well-deserved pampering with a spa day. We chose a treatment package at Botanika Union inside the Grand Cayman Marriott Resort. You’ll emerge feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Just be sure not to schedule your appointment during their Sunday brunch with live music (Their staff was kind enough to recommend a time other than this since their brunch entertainment can be quite lively). If you’re looking for a few nice gifts, the hotel’s gift shop, conveniently located next to the spa, offers a nicely curated selection of island themed gifts.
Explore Like a Local
For a taste of local life, rent or borrow bicycles from your hotel and embark on a ride through the lush pathway from West Bay Road into Camana Bay. This waterfront destination features a variety of shops and restaurants. Spend the afternoon indulging in some window shopping, sipping cocktails at a waterfront bar, or enjoying a refreshing iced coffee.
Culinary Delights: Where to Eat and Drink in Grand Cayman
In addition to its stunning beaches and island activities, Grand Cayman has a vibrant culinary scene. From fresh seafood to international flavors, the island offers something for every palate. Here are four of our favorites:
- Lobster Pot
Nestled along the waterfront, Lobster Pot is a beloved Grand Cayman institution renowned for its delectable seafood and captivating atmosphere. This harbor front restaurant offers diners the unique opportunity to watch giant tarpon being fed in the water right outside their window. With its casual ambiance and terrific service, Lobster Pot is a great spot for a memorable dining experience.
- Piper’s Garden Oasis
Escape the hustle and bustle of the island and retreat to the tranquil oasis of Ms. Piper’s. Tucked away behind the Hilton Resort and amidst lush tropical gardens, this hidden gem offers a delightful dining experience in a serene setting. Indulge in an array of Caribbean-inspired dishes crafted from locally-sourced ingredients, including fresh seafood and tropical fruits. Pair your meal with one of their signature cocktails and savor the flavors of the island at this charming restaurant.
- Yoshi
Located in the heart of Grand Cayman, this casual restaurant is an unsuspecting find. Yoshi specializes in traditional and innovative sushi creations made from the freshest ingredients available. From classic rolls to signature specialties, each dish is expertly created to showcase the delicate flavors of Japanese cuisine.
- Cayman Spirits Distillery
Indulge your senses at the Cayman Spirits Distillery, where craft spirits meet island charm. Located in George Town, this unique establishment offers visitors the opportunity to tour the distillery and sample a selection of handcrafted spirits. Learn about the distillation process and the rich history of Caymanian rum. After your tour, relax in the distillery’s tasting room and enjoy signature cocktails made with their award-winning spirits. Whether you’re a spirits enthusiast or simply looking for a fun way to spend a few hours, a visit to Cayman Spirits Co. is worth a visit.
