Thanksgiving: Start Simple, Stay Sane

Thanksgiving sets the tone for the weeks to come, so we like to keep it beautifully simple. Start by planning and prepping early. Make a checklist of what can be done ahead — everything from grocery shopping and ingredient prep to setting the table the night before (or earlier if possible). We even label serving platters and utensils in advance, so there’s no guessing game on the big day. When it comes to setting up components of your hosting plan ahead of time – we strongly encourage it.  Brining the turkey (we still swear by Alton Brown’s recipe!) can be done a day or two ahead. Sides like stuffing, casseroles or chopping vegetables for dishes can be prepped early and popped in the oven before guests arrive. We are sharing our fall favorite Apple Crisp dessert because it’s deliciously simple, can be made ahead of time, and doesn’t take up the coveted refrigerator space (recipe below). And remember – don’t do it all yourself … delegate! Assign everyone a task: someone to pour drinks, another to manage appetizers, help with the timing of dishes, bring food to the table, make sure the gravy hot and someone to help plate desserts or set out on a dessert table. Also, recruit a couple of key players to help clean up after the meal.  Hosting shouldn’t mean missing out on the fun. Set up a drink station — cider punch for kids and a batch cocktail for adults — and a grazing table away from the kitchen. This keeps guests mingling while you finish last-minute touches. Recruit helpers to make sure each area stays stocked and clean.  Add place cards and a printed menu (customized from our templates in advance) for a polished feel without the fuss. Simplify Your December Once Thanksgiving winds down, the holiday season picks up speed. The secret to enjoying it? Prepare early.  We’ve curated a Holiday Gift Guide featuring 50+ thoughtful ideas, organized to make your shopping effortless: For the Favorite Cook For the Home & Entertainer For Men For the Travel Lover For Young Adults Stocking Stuffers Personalized Treasures We’ve done the searching, so you can focus on the giving. When it comes to wrapping, our 2025 look is understated elegance — think subtle winter patterns, velvet and striped ribbons, greenery sprigs, and personalized gift toppers. They double as keepsakes and make every gift feel special. Bake, Gift & Gather December is also for baking, gathering and giving — we’ll be sharing our favorite holiday recipes and DIY ideas on the blog. From amaryllis bulb gifts wrapped in burlap and twine to holiday cookie boxes and a Charleston getaway inspiration, we’ll help you make each tradition feel intentional and beautiful, without being overwhelming. This month we’re also highlighting our Christmas Market trip in Europe — full of inspiration for cozy décor, homemade gifts, and festive food ideas you can easily recreate at home. The Shookhill Secret Philosophy Our holiday mantra is simple: Plan early, keep it easy, and enjoy fully.Whether it’s a perfectly imperfect Thanksgiving meal or a beautifully wrapped gift, what truly matters are the moments you create and the people you share them with.Try

Holiday Season Simplified: Hosting, Wrapping & 50 Gift Ideas

Thanksgiving officially marks the start of the most festive (and often the busiest) time of year. It’s a beautiful season—filled with gatherings, traditions, and meaningful moments—but it can easily become overwhelming if we’re not intentional. At Shookhill Secret, our goal is simple: plan & prep ahead so you can enjoy the season as much as everyone else. Thanksgiving is the perfect place to begin. It’s one of the rare occasions that brings everyone together—quite literally—around the table. But getting that meal planned, organized, and perfectly timed is no small feat. The secret? A bit of planning, a dash of humor, and a willingness to delegate. Think of hosting like conducting a symphony. Each person plays a role, and when everyone knows their part, the day flows beautifully. Assign specific dishes to guests, especially those who make something well or enjoy contributing. If you’d like something done a certain way, provide a recipe, photo, or instructions—it’s the easiest way to ensure your vision comes to life without doing it all yourself.  Our hosting essentials is a super helpful place to start.  And don’t be afraid to start early, we’re doing a good deal of traveling over the holidays so we get a jump start on what we can.  It’s not too early to pull together your Thanksgiving tablescape, plan the menu and print the placecards. Set the tone with smart stations To keep the kitchen clear and the mood relaxed, set up a drink station (we love a cider punch which is easily prepped in advance) and a fall-inspired charcuterie board away from the main cooking area. This allows guests to mingle and snack without standing in your workspace. We also let guests know what time dinner will be served and what’s on the menu (download our menu template), which helps manage expectations and keeps the day on schedule. And don’t be afraid to ask for help! Thanksgiving is a day when everyone can contribute—carving the turkey, pouring the wine, lighting candles, or bringing dishes to the table. Add thoughtful touches Small details make gatherings feel special. Using our guides, menus and templates makes it easy to do (we already did the heavy lifting for you). Place cards help guests feel welcome, and a printed menu adds elegance to larger tables. And if you’d like someone to say grace or share what they’re thankful for, leave a gentle note near the appetizers so guests can be prepared. It keeps the moment meaningful without feeling forced. Why planning ahead matters Once Thanksgiving winds down, the holiday season arrives quickly—and that’s when stress can creep in. This is why we set aside time now to get organized, so we can enjoy December instead of sprinting through it. Here’s our secret list… This year, we’ve created a fantastic Curated Holiday Gift Guide with over 50 fabulous ideas, thoughtfully organized to make shopping easier and more personal: For the Favorite Cook For the Home & Hostess For Men For the Travel Lover For Young Adults & College Students Stocking Stuffers Personalized & Meaningful Gifts…and more! We’ve done the hard part so you don’t have to spend hours searching for great gifts. Elegant, personalized wrapping made easy Once the gifts are chosen, a beautiful presentation makes them even more special. Our 2025 wrapping theme is understated elegance—subtle winter patterns, velvet and striped ribbons in rich reds and greens, and adornments like greenery sprigs, gold stars, or miniature ornaments. It’s these little touches that make gifts feel thoughtful and memorable. Holding space for gratitude In that spirit, we encourage you to participate in our annual our Random Acts of Kindness Challenge—a gentle, meaningful way to spread kindness every week in December. We hope you’ll join us in uplifting your own corner of the world.  Download our free Flyer and Tag to share with guests on Thanksgiving. Final Thoughts This time of year is about gathering, gratitude, and connection. With a little planning, delegation, and early holiday prep, the season can feel joyful instead of stressful. We hope our hosting tips, gift guide, and wrapping inspiration help you create a holiday filled with warmth, ease, and the people who matter most.
