How to Turn Fresh Blackberries into Irresistible
There’s something about summer that invites you to slow down, roll up your sleeves, and savor the sweetness of the season—especially when blackberries are involved. Whether you’re gathering them by hand at Lineberger’s Maple Springs Farm near Charlotte, NC, or spotting perfect pint containers at your local farmers market, now is the time to enjoy these bold, juicy berries while they’re at their peak – and maybe enjoy a sweet summer treat made with these berries.
At Shookhill Secret, we believe that the most memorable meals begin with the freshest ingredients, and nothing says summer quite like a dessert made from sun-ripened fruit you picked yourself (or at least bought from someone who did!). And when it comes to blackberries, their deep flavor and just-sweet-enough bite make them perfect for all kinds of culinary creations—from cobblers and jams to the star of today’s recipe: Blackberry Crumble Bars.
These bars come straight from one of our favorite sources of Southern inspiration—Blackberry Farm, the luxurious yet laid-back resort tucked into the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Known for its farm-to-table approach and impeccable hospitality, Blackberry Farm knows how to take something simple and elevate it to something truly special. And that’s exactly what these Blackberry Crumble Bars do.
Where to Pick or Find the Best Blackberries
If you’re in the Charlotte, NC area, you’re in luck. Lineberger’s Maple Springs Farm in Dallas, NC (just under an hour west of Charlotte) is one farm that offers U-pick blackberries each summer. It’s a family-friendly spot with scenic rows of bramble bushes ripe for the picking.
Not near a farm? Don’t worry—local farmers markets are bursting with baskets of blackberries this time of year. Look for plump, glossy berries that are deep purple to black in color. Avoid any that are dull or squishy, and be sure to buy a little extra (because let’s be honest—they’ll disappear quickly on the ride home!).
The Charm of Simple Summer Desserts
There’s nothing complicated about these bars—but that’s part of what makes them so delightful. In fact, they’re the kind of dessert that invites you to slow down. Serve them slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Either way, they’re another delicious reminder to make the most of summer’s freshest flavors.
So whether you’re picking berries with the kids, stocking up at the farmers market, or just looking for a simple recipe to bring to your next event, these Blackberry Crumble Bars are the kind of treat that make summer sweeter in every bite.
